The game was tied, there wasn't much time remaining and nerves were getting to Hawai'i Prep's Kalei Konrad as he was about to attempt a field goal.

The senior's attempt didn't get much air, but it cleared the crossbar — by inches — and lifted Hawai'i Prep to a 17-14 win over third-seeded and host Moanalua in last night's quarterfinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division II State Football Championships.

"It was my first game-winning kick," Konrad said of his kick with 2:07 remaining. "I saw the snap, it was wobbly, JJ (Higginson) held it and it came out funny on my kick."

Hawai'i Prep (11-0), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, continues its island-hopping trip by playing at No. 2 Kaua'i (9-0) in next Friday's semifinals.

It took six minutes for Ka Makani to advance downfield on the longest drive of the game, and Ka Makani called a timeout before the kick.

"Honestly, I was 50-50," said Konrad when asked of his initial thoughts of the kick. "I had no idea."

Ka Makani's defense then stalled Nä Menehune at HPA's 39 with 37 seconds remaining. On fourth-and 11, Adam Francisco's pass was low to Essaye Villaver, and Ka Makani took a few knees, then celebrated with about 75 of their fans who made the trip.

"Amazing," Ka Makani quarterback Keanu Yamamoto, who threw for 150 yards, said of the win. "Amazing is an understatement. It feels really good. Really, really good."

Hawai'i Prep coach Jordan Hayslip didn't need to say much to his squad about Moanalua's final drive.

"We figured they'd be throwing the ball and we talked to our defensive backs," he said. "We didn't say much, they knew. It's a senior-led defense out there."

Moanalua (10-2), the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion, tied it at 14-14 on Tahje Canyon's 80-yard run and Xavier Peterson's 2-point conversion with 5 seconds left in the third.

Nä Menehune had rallied late for several wins in the regular season. They almost pulled it off in the final minute, but multiple penalties throughout the game hurt Nä Menehune.

Moanalua coach Arnold Martinez felt his squad was the better team, but Hawai'i Prep was "the more advantageous team. They took advantage of some mistakes and they were more opportunistic . They took advantage of some opportunities."
