State football: Late field goal lifts Hawaii Prep past Moanalua, 17-14

Kalei Konrad kicked a 31-yard field goal that barely cleared the crossbar with 2:07 remaining to lift Hawai‘i Prep to a 17-14 win over third-seeded and host Moanalua in tonight’s quarterfinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II State Football Championships.

“It was my first game-winning kick,” Konrad said. “I saw the snap, it was wobbly, JJ (Higginson) held it and it came out funny.”
Konrad, who said he was nervous and had a timeout to somewhat settle himself, wasn’t totally sure his kick would make it.
“Honestly, I was 50-50. I had no idea.”
Ka Makani’s defense then stalled Nä Menehune at HPA’s 39 with 37 seconds remaining. On fourth-and 11, Adam Francisco’s pass was low to Essaye Villaver, and Ka Makani took a few knees, then celebrated with about 75 fans who made the trip.
Hawai‘i Prep (11-0), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, plays at No. 2 Kaua‘i (9-0) in next Friday’s semifinals.
Hawai‘i Prep led 7-6 at halftime, then stormed into the third quarter, taking just four plays to score on Keanu Yamamoto’s 10-yard pass to Nathaniel Adams. Konrad’s PAT made it 14-6.
Moanalua (10-2), O‘ahu Interscholastic Association champion, tied it on Tahje Canyon’s 80-yard run and Xavier Peterson’s 2-point conversion in the third.
