Salvage company hoping tide will help lift sailboat

Advertiser Staff

A marine salvage company was planning to try to remove a sailboat aground off Waikíkí between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. today, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said.

The 72-foot Momentum ran aground Monday morning about 100 yards off the Sheraton Waikíkí. A broken anchor line reportedly caused the boat to drift, state officials said.

The DLNR said marine salvage company Cates International has signed a contract to remove of the vessel.

The tentative plan calls for removal during high tide, weather conditions permitting. A tugboat will come in to pull the vessel off the reef.
