Six years ago while hiking in Nuuanu, 19-year-old Daniel Levey fell to his death. Daniel was doing what he loved best, hiking O'ahu's mountain trails. He'd come home from college in the summer with the goal of reaching the four corner points of Oahu. He was able to see Makapuu, Kaena, Kahuku and Barbers Point before the tragedy near Lulumahu Falls in July 2003.

"Daniel's Ocean Views," the follow-up volume to "Daniel's Views," is filled with photographs from the island's most scenic climbs accompanied by quotations Daniel loved, found in papers he put together several years before he died.

"Daniel particularly loved the Makapuu and Sandy Beach area," said his mother, Joyce Cassen Levey. "But he also loved the challenging trails, especially if they had wonderful views of the ocean."

Compiled by Joyce, father Norman, and sister Sara Levey, the book honors a young life well-lived, and documents Oahu's spectacular vistas from trails high in the Koolau and Waianae mountains.

PHOTO BOOK PRESENTS BIRDS OF THE SEA, FROM ALBATROSS TO TERNS

ore than 3,000 species of seabirds range across the world's oceans. In excess of 14 million birds representing close to two dozen species make their home in the Hawaiian Islands. These are nä manu kai, the birds of the sea."

So begins the introduction of Robert J. Shallenberger's beautiful book, "Hawaiian Birds of the Sea."

Twenty-four hours spent on Mänana (Rabbit) Island as a young graduate student at the University of Hawaii convinced Shallenberger, a conservation biologist, to change course from studying dolphins to seabirds. Surrounded by the island's thousands of raucous terns and shearwaters, he found his life's passion.

In "Hawaiian Birds of the Sea," Shallenberger presents his subjects through his lens: terns, albatross, frigates, boobies, noddies and petrels, in flight, nurturing chicks, courting, mating, sunbathing, resting, soaring.

His photographs have appeared in many publications, including National Geographic and Audubon. He is the Hawaii Island conservation director for The Nature Conservancy. $21.99 at booksellers around town.

GET THE MOST USE OUT OF THOSE HIKING BOOTS WITH PROPER CARE

Hiking boots need plenty of care off the trail. Keep them comfy by using oil-based waterproofing on leather boots and silicone-based waterproofing on synthetic boots.

Bang the boots together to knock dirt or sand from the lugs. Use a stiff nylon brush to sweep away residual dirt. And wipe boots with a damp cloth and air dry (not in hot sun).
