BALTIMORE — The game began with the sizable crowd buzzing about Matt Wieters, who was about to make his much-anticipated major league debut.

Most of the 42,704 fans left the stadium talking about designated hitter Luke Scott and Wieters' batterymate, Brad Bergesen.

Scott extended his recent power surge with a grand slam and a solo shot off Dontrelle Willis (1-2), and the surging Baltimore Orioles received a fine pitching performance from Bergesen in a 7-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers last night.

Wieters went 0 for 4, the only Baltimore starter without a hit.

"I felt like I saw the ball well tonight," he said. "It's something that, an 0-for-4 day, you are going to have a lot of them in this game. You just got to go out there and try to find some holes."

Wieters' hitless debut might have been the only negative for the Orioles, who stretched their season-high winning streak to five games behind Scott and Bergesen (2-2) — who both received shaving-cream pies in the face during their post-game interviews.

It's a fun tradition that the Orioles began early in their five-game run, the team's longest winning streak since April 2-7, 2008.

Since coming off the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, Scott has five home runs and 12 RBIs in three games. His second consecutive two-homer game included his first career grand slam, a third-inning shot that put Baltimore up 5-0.

In the fifth, Scott hit a drive over the right-field scoreboard to become the first Oriole to have successive multihomer games since Albert Belle in 2000.

"I feel good and I've been seeing the ball well. I'm kind of excited to get back to playing," said Scott, who was sidelined from May 11 to 27 with a shoulder strain. "I've been chewing my fingernails off for the last two weeks."

YANKEES 3, INDIANS 1

Andy Pettitte (5-1) gave up a run on six hits in five innings before leaving with a stiff back in the sixth, and catcher Jorge Posada had two hits in his return to the lineup as visiting New York ended Cleveland's season-high four-game winning streak. New York moved into the AL East lead by a half game over Boston.

WHITE SOX 11, ROYALS 2

Jermaine Dye's first-inning homer ignited a 17-hit attack and everyone in visiting Chicago's starting lineup had at least one hit in support of Clayton Richards (2-0), who handed Kansas City its 14th loss in 19 games.

BLUE JAYS 6, RED SOX 3

Scott Rolen and Rod Barajas each had two RBIs, right-hander Casey Janssen (1-1) gave up three runs and 11 hits over seven innings as Toronto returned home aftera a 0-9 road trip to beat Boston and snap a nine-game losing streak.

RANGERS SWEEP A'S: Scott Feldman (4-0) scattered two runs and five hits over six innings as host Texas beat Oakland, 5-2, to complete a doubleheader sweep. In the first game, Andruw Jones hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth to send Texas to a 6-3 victory.

RAYS 5, TWINS 3

Evan Longoria and Carl Crawford homered, and James Shields (4-4) allowed two runs and seven hits in seven-plus innings to get his first win since May 3 as host Tampa Bay ended a season-high, five-game losing streak with a victory over Minnesota.

MARINERS 5, ANGELS 2

Jason Vargas (2-0) allowed two runs and four hits in 6 1/3 innings and Ichiro Suzuki was 2 for 5 with an RBI single to extended his hitting streak to 22 games, helping visiting Seattle beat Los Angele. Seattle won consecutive games for the first time since beating the Angels on April 24-25.

PHILLIES 5, NATIONALS 4

Maui's Shane Victorino had four hits to lead a 16-hit attack and Jimmy Rollins scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Chase Utley in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-1 lead as Philadelphia won its second straight. Washington lost its fourth in a row to drop to 13-34.

CUBS 2, DODGERS 1

Matt Kemp homered with two outs in the top of the seventh for Los Angeles, but Koyie Hill led off the bottom of the inning with a homer and Kosuke Fukudome hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly as Chicago ended the Dodgers' four-game winning streak.

METS 2, MARLINS 1

Omir Santos homered in the fifth and singled home Gary Sheffield in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift New York over Florida. Sheffield singled off Brian Sanches (1-1), stole second after one out and went to third when catcher John Baker's throw went into center field.

BREWERS 3, REDS 2

Corey Hart and Prince Fielder homered and Braden Looper (5-3) gave up two runs on two hits over seven innings to beat Johnny Cueto (4-3) as host Milwaukee made the most of three hits to end Cincinnati's four-game winning streak.

ASTROS 6, PIRATES 1

Brian Moehler (2-7) gave up a run and seven hits in pitching his first complete game in nearly nine years and rookie Edwin Maysonet homered while going 4 for 4 and driving in four runs, helping visiting Houston beat Pittsburgh to end a seven-game losing streak.

ROCKIES 3, PADRES 0

Jason Marquis (7-3) scattered six hits over eight innings and Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in making Jim Tracy's debut as Colorado's new manager a success with a victory over San Diego.

BRAVES 10, DIAMONDBACKS 6

Yunel Escobar hit a three-run homer and Jair Jurrjens (5-2), who allowed a season-high five runs on eight hits in five innings, doubled home two runs as visiting Atlanta took a 10-1 lead after 3 1/2 innings to beat Arizona and end a four-game losing streak.

GIANTS 4, CARDINALS 2

Matt Cain (6-1) gave up two runs — one earned — on six hits in 6 1/3 innings, Pablo Sandoval drove in a pair of runs, and Fred Lewis and Emmanuel Burriss also drove in runs as host San Francisco held off St. Louis for its fourth straight victory.
