KULA, Maui — One person was critically injured when a car crashed into a home on Lower Kula Road around 5 p.m. yesterday, setting both the car and house on fire.

The car apparently struck a propane tank, said county spokeswoman Mahina Martin. Firefighters had the blaze under control but were still working to extinguish it yesterday evening.

Lower Kula Road was closed between Kula Highway and Kula Community Road, and phone service was expected to be reduced in Makawao, Kula and Pa'ia for several hours due to damage to a fiber optic phone line, she said.

The county's 9-1-1 line was temporarily interrupted, but has since been restored.
