'Iolani's Anderson tops juniors in USA kayaks

Hawai'i Canoe and Kayak Team member Giulia Anderson finished as the top junior female at the recent USA Canoe/Kayak National Team Trials in Chula Vista, Calif.
Anderson, an 'Iolani senior, won three of four K2 kayaking races with partner Katy Hill of Washington at the trials, held April 24 to 26.
Hoku Keala of Kamehameha and Rachel Fujita of Punahou teamed up to finish third in the 500-meter K2 and fourth in the 1,000-meter K2 kayaking races.
Fujita also finished seventh individually in the 500 and 1,000 finals.
Mid-Pacific's Kalei Kahookele finished seventh in the boys 500 kayak final.
All four are members of the HCKT.
In senior events, Maryknoll graduates Pat and Ryan Dolan were second in the 500 and 1,000 K2 events. Ryan was also third in the K1 open and Pat was fourth.
In the 1,000 open, Pat was second and Ryan was fourth. The Dolans were also members of the winning K4 1,000 team.
Eric Abbott, a Punahou graduate, was third in the men's K2 500 and 1,000.
COURSE OFFERED TO LEARN HOW TO SURFSKI, KAYAK
Learn to paddle a surfski or an Olympic flatwater kayak at a four-day course offered by the Hawai'i Canoe and Kayak Team.
The course will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on June 8-11 in waters fronting the Hui Nalu Canoe Club halau at Maunalua Bay in Hawai'i Kai.
The instructors will be U.S. national team kayaker Brandon Woods and HCKT head coach Robyn Singh. Correct stroke technique and kayak fundamentals will be stressed.

SPEED AND QUICKNESS SUMMER SERIES BEGIN
The summer session for Hawai'i Speed and Quickness begins this weekend at the University of Hawai'i's Klum Gym.
Each session is $10 and open to all ages.
Sessions are from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Registration is at 8 a.m.
Former and current UH athletes serve as instructors. Drills involve plyometrics and resistance workouts.
