TRENTON, N.J. — Cleveland prospect Jeanmar Gomez pitched a perfect game for Double-A Akron on Thursday, shutting down Trenton 3-0 in the Eastern League.
With his pitches breaking in every direction, the 21-year-old righty retired all 27 batters without much trouble. He struck out eight.
Left fielder Matt McBride made a diving catch on Kevin Smith’s liner leading off the ninth inning. Gomez then struck out Jose Gil and got Justin Snyder on a fly ball, setting off a wild pileup on the mound.
The crowd of 6,344 at the home of the New York Yankees’ affiliate applauded Gomez’s effort.
Gomez pitched the first perfect game in Akron’s history. The Venezuelan is 4-0 with an 0.31 ERA this season, and 23-19 in a four-year pro career.
