WARSAW, Poland — Maria Sharapova played her first tour singles match in nearly 10 months today, beating Tathiana Garbin of Italy 6-1, 6-7 (6), 6-3 in the first round of the Warsaw Open.
The Russian wore a bandage on her right shoulder and wasted three match points in the second set before being taken to a third set.
Sharapova last played singles in August after being sidelined with a torn rotator cuff. She played one doubles match since. The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner and former No. 1 player is now ranked No. 126.
