The problem with today's society is the fact that most of the younger generations are wrapped up in their own personal affairs. Many of today's youth simply do not care about the perils of our planet. This raises a huge problem because we are the future voices of tomorrow — our decisions today will impact our future. What's lacking is civic engagement. Civic engagement is the public collectively getting involved for a common cause. Our voices are important because authoritative people will hear our pleas, and hopefully do something about it.

But sometimes our voices seem muted. I used to constantly feel like my opinion didn't count because I'm a minor. As my term on the Teen Editorial Board closes, I have come to find that my voice is being heard.

With that said, I promise to speak up for myself as well as for my shy peers. I will spread awareness of world issues amongst my colleagues, and encourage them to exercise their First Amendment rights. I will not be afraid to stick up for what I believe in, and I will not let intimidation stand in my way. Look out, world, I have a voice.
