TOLEDO, Ohio — Court documents say former Toledo athletes charged in an alleged point-shaving scheme talked and met several times with two suburban Detroit men who bet large amounts on Toledo basketball and football games.

A federal indictment in Detroit says Ghazi Manni (GAH'-zee MAN'-ee) of Sterling Heights, Mich., met with players near Toledo's football stadium and a casino in Detroit.

Investigators say two other meetings took place at a bank following Toledo basketball games during the 2005-06 season.

The FBI says the scheme began in 2004 and continued until 2006.

Manni and Mitchell Karam, of Troy, Mich., are charged with conspiring to influence sporting contests. Seven former Toledo players also are charged.

Manni and Karam could make court appearances Friday.
