Big Island crash victim identified as Waimea man
Big Island police have identified Peter Gusman, 70, of Waimea, as the man who died after being involved in a a one-vehicle crash Saturday on Kawaihae Road (Route 19) in the area of the 58-mile marker.
Responding to a 1:25 p.m. call, South Kohala patrol officers determined that Gusman was driving a 1998 Ford F-150 pickup truck and traveling west on Kawaihae Road when the truck ran off the right side of the road.
He was wearing a seat belt. Fire rescue personnel took Gusman to North Hawai'i Community Hospital, where he died at 2:06 p.m.
Police do not believe that speed, alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. Police believe that Gusman may have suffered a medical condition prior to the crash. An autopsy has been ordered.
