Maui firefighters recover woman's body from base of 180-foot falls

Maui News

HUELO — The Maui Fire Department's Air One helicopter took firefighters into an inaccessible area of Huelo yesterday afternoon to recover the body of a young woman found at the base of a 180-foot waterfall.

A visitor who was hiking in the area reported finding a body around 1:45 p.m., said Capt. Jack Williams of Rescue 10 in Kahului.

Firefighters from Engine 2 in Paia responded first to the call, but the visitor was unfamiliar with the area and a cell phone used to call rescuers kept dropping calls, Williams said.

Firefighters with Rescue 10 and the Air One helicopter were called in to assist with the search, which ended around 2:20 p.m. when the body of a woman, possibly in her 20s, was found in a pond at the base of a waterfall off Door of Faith Road, he said.

Police were called to investigate, and firefighters later recovered the body after being flown down to the base of the waterfall, dangling from the end of 150-foot ropes, Williams said.

The police investigation was ongoing as of last evening, he said.
