Sophomore left-hander Cody Wheeler fired a no-hitter and No. 18 Coastal Carolina beat Hawai'i, 4-0, tonight to take the opener of the four-game series at Les Murakami Stadium.

Wheeler (5-0) struck out a career-high 10 and walked three. He entered the game having walked four in his previous 30 innings for the Chanticleers (19-4).

It was the first time UH has been no-hit since Rice's Jeff Nichols did in a seven-inning game in Houston. It was the first time UH has been no-hit at home since UH-Hilo's Derek Diaz and Horace Gray combined for one in 1982, although the Rainbows still won that game, 3-1.

Jayson Kramer (1-3) allowed two runs (one earned), five hits and a walk with four strikeouts in seven innings for UH (13-9).

Coastal Carolina broke the scoreless deadlock with two in the top of the sixth inning. Scott Woodward led off with a single to first, stole second and took third when Rico Noel reached on a sacrifice and error when third baseman Vinnie Catricala fumbled a bunt to put runners at the corners. Tyler Bortnick was hit by a pitch to load the bases. David Anderson's sacrifice fly to left scored Woodward to put thc Chanticleers ahead, 1-0. Chance Gilmore singled to center to score Noel, but Bortnick was thrown out at third when first baseman Kevin Macdonald cutoff the throw home and threw to third. Gilmore was thrown out trying to steal second to end the inning.

The Chanticleers cushioned their lead with two in the eighth. With one out, Woodward reached on a single to short and took second on a throwing error by shortstop Greg Garcia on the play. Noel singled to center to score Woodward; Noel took second on the throw home. Bortnick grounded out to third, as the runner held second. But Anderson singled to center to score Noel to make it 4-0.
