WAILUKU — One of two elderly pedestrians struck by a charter bus March 13 in Kaanapali has died, Maui police said today

Police said Leo Nekus, 81, of Lahaina, died yesterday.

A 79-year-old woman who also was struck by the bus is in stable condition at Maui Memorial Hospital, police said.

Nekus is Maui County's fourth traffic fatality for 2009, compared to five at this time last year.

Nekus and the woman were crossing Honoapiilani Highway when they were hit by a bus turning onto the highway from Kai Ala Drive. The bus, driven by a 66-year-old Kahului man, was carrying 13 hotel workers on a commuter route. No one on the bus was injured.
