UCSD defeats Hawaii again

After winning the first 36 matches between the teams, the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team lost its second in a row to UC San Diego last night in La Jolla, Calif.
Gerald Houseman, Frank Fritsch and Jason Spangler each had 15 kills, and Punahou School graduate Will Ehrman added 14 kills, including the match-ender, as the No. 8 Tritons beat the No. 12 Warriors, 30-21, 30-27, 23-30, 28-30, 15-13, at RIMAC Arena.
Phil Bannan had 64 assists and nine blocks for UCSD (10-10, 6-9 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation).
Sean Carney and Brennon Dyer each had 19 kills, and Jim Clar added 11 kills for Hawai'i (4-13, 3-11).
After losing the first two sets, the Warriors battled back to send it into a fifth set. UCSD surged ahead 8-3, but UH fought back to tie it 11-11 and 12-12. The Tritons went up 14-12 on a UH service error and a block by Calvin Ross and Ehrman. After the Warriors closed to 14-13, Ehrman delivered the final kill.
