Seniors Brock Granger and Reid Sakamoto are the epitome of senior leadership, doing everything they needed to lead the 'Iolani boys soccer team to its second straight league title.

"I think both of them brought some composure to our team on the field," 'Iolani coach Chris Lee said. "They are very good on the ball and they don't panic. Seeing that from your leaders and seeing how composed they are, it was a good example for the other players."

Granger's 13 goals aided the Raiders in a league-high 41 scores, while Sakamoto's skill in the back led a defense that allowed a league-low 10 goals.

Granger, a midfielder, was named the Offensive Player of the Year and Sakamoto, a defender, was named the Defensive Player of the Year for the Interscholastic League of Ho-nolulu, as voted by league coaches.

Lee pointed out that one of Granger's best attributes was his "unselfishness. He's a talented player who easily could try to take over a game, but he understood that by trusting in his teammates and utilizing his teammates, it gave him more opportunities to score."

Sakamoto is "one of the hardest working players," Lee said. "He's one of the most competitive guys out there and he's worked really hard to get where he's at, and he made himself into a really good player."

Three forwards were named to the first team: Mid-Pacific's Cody Sullivan, Saint Louis' Warren Spencer and Punahou's Alessi Sia.

Sullivan scored seven, including four against Punahou in one game, Spencer was second in the league in scoring with 11 goals, and Sia was considered one of Punahou's top offensive threats and was always covered.

The first-team midfielders are Punahou's Kevin Johns, 'Iolani's Nick Goo and Keith Lum, Pac-Five's Marc Hope, and Kamehameha's Gareth Gomez.

Johns tied for the Buffanblu lead in scoring with five goals. Goo, who also played up top, scored five and Lum added four. Hope, out of Hawai'i Baptist, led the Wolfpack with seven goals and Gomez scored three.

First-team defenders are Kamehameha's Kainoa Kahui, and Jonathon Cloutier, and Cody Sia of Punahou.

Kahui, last year's ILH Defensive Player of the Year, provided a powerful physical presence in the backfield. Cloutier's poise and Sia's ability to break up potential attacks helped the duo limit opponents to 13 goals in 12 games.

'Iolani goalkeeper Christopher Otani was named to the first team after posting a .833 goals per game average.

Granger and Kahui are three-time selections; Otani was picked to the first team for the second straight year.

'Iolani's Lee was named the Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.

Selected by coaches of respective leagues.
