Fourth-ranked Hawai'i finally plays at home tonight after a roller-coaster 15-game road trip to open the water polo season. The Rainbow Wahine take on fifth-ranked Arizona State at 6 p.m. at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The teams might be ranked in the top five, but so far they are zero-for-the- Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
ASU (9-7, 0-2 MPSF) has a three-match losing streak. Hawai'i (8-6, 0-3) opened with four wins, then lost to San Jose State (in overtime) and Stanford — now ranked No. 1. The next day, the 'Bows shocked Team USA in an exhibition and UCLA, currently ranked third.
The Bruins had dominated UH like no other, winning all 33 of the teams' previous meetings. Hawai'i's 13-12 victory Feb. 7 was UCLA's first loss in nearly two years and ended a program-best 43-match winning streak.
Hawai'i senior Kelly Mason had six goals in the match, hitting the game-winner with 2:21 remaining and fueling a 5-2 fourth-period rally. Since then, the 'Bows have gone 2-4, including a pair of losses to the Bruins.
Mason leads UH with 36 goals. Dutch junior Leonie Van Der Molen has 24 goals and has drawn a team-high 26 kick-outs. Sophomore goalie Serena Bredin averages seven saves.
Hawai'i is last in the MPSF, a half-match behind ASU. It concludes this homestand Tuesday against second-ranked Southern California, then plays the San Diego State Tournament before closing the regular season against seventh-ranked Cal (March 28) and sixth-ranked San Diego State (April 3).
The Rainbows play a series of exhibitions against the Canadian and Australian national teams before hosting the MPSF Championship, April 24 to 26.
