Florida Gulf Coast beats UH in softball

Jessica Carter homered and drove in three runs as Florida Gulf Coast beat Hawai'i, 5-4, in the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament last night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Tinisha Milca drove in two runs for Hawai'i, which scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it interesting.
Florida Gulf Coast improved to 22-4; Hawai'i dropped to 8-13.
In other softball action:
Sherise Musquiz allowed two runs in a complete-game performance as Hawai'i Pacific beat Lock Haven (Pa.), 3-2, yesterday to earn a split of a softball doubleheader at HPU Windward field. Lock Haven, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, won the first game, 1-0. HPU is 15-3; Lock Haven is 6-4.
SURFING
THREE LOCALS ADVANCE
Hawai'i surfers Fred Patacchia Jr., Roy Powers and Dustin Barca advanced to the third round of the Quiksilver Pro men's contest yesterday at Snapper Rocks, Gold Coast, Australia.
The second round was completed in 2- to 4-foot waves.
Patacchia had a near-perfect score of 9.7 (out of 10) in his second-round victory over Australia's Phillip MacDonald.
BASKETBALL
CHAMINADE MEN WIN
Joel Smith scored 32 points as Chaminade (15-12, 8-5) beat Hawai'i-Hilo (14-12, 7-6), 68-63, in a Pacific West Conference game last night at McCabe gym.
It was the season finale for both teams.
In PacWest women's games:
• Latoya Wily scored 31 points and grabbed 20 rebounds as Brigham Young-Hawai'i (15-11, 7-5) beat Hawai'i Pacific (14-14, 7-5), 91-76, at the Cannon Activities Center.
• Sheila Azevedo scored 24 points, Jessica Hanato added 16 and Hina Kimitete had 15 as Hawai'i-Hilo (15-9, 6-6) beat Chaminade (0-27, 0-12), 86-67, at McCabe gym. It was the season finale for both teams.
• Also, HPU guard Tiffany Wilson was named Pacific West Conference women's basketball player of the week. Wilson, of Long Beach, Calif., averaged 23.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last week.
