A forecast of inclement weather has prompted organizers to cancel tonight's Sunset on the Beach event at Queen's Surf Beach in Waikiki, sponsor Tesoro Hawaii said.
Tomorrow's Sunset on the Beach is still on, Tesoro said. Food booths open at 4 p.m. and Sunset the Band will play at 5 p.m. Two films will be shown after sundown: the short film "Concert for Hope," followed by "The Pursuit of Happyness" starring Will Smith.
SILENT MARCH FOR STABBING VICTIM
The Hawaii State Coalition Against Domestic Violence will hold a silent march Tuesday in Honolulu in remembrance of Fredlynn Hoapili, who was stabbed to death March 3 in her home in Lihu'e, Kaua'i.
The march will begin at 5:30 p.m. in front of the state Capitol and is intended to honor Hoapili and also to bring attention to the issue of violence against women.
Hoapili's husband, Joseph, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with his wife's death. He is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.
KAKA'AKO CARJACK SUSPECT CHARGED
A 23-year-old Papakolea woman suspected of carjacking a city ambulance at the Kaka'ako Waterfront Park Thursday was charged yesterday with second-degree robbery and assault.
Saralyn Lopes remained in a police cellblock last night on $20,000 bail. She is scheduled to make her initial court appearance Monday.
Lopes is accused of getting into the front seat of an ambulance and driving off while two mobile intensive care technicians were working on a female patient in the back of the vehicle.
One of the paramedics managed to get into the front seat of the ambulance and prevent the woman from driving out of the park's parking lot, police said.
Once the ambulance came to a stop, the 32-year-old paramedic shoved the woman out of the vehicle and she began to assault him. Police arrived at the scene and arrested the woman without further incident.
No one was seriously injured, police said.
HONOR WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
Two free public events will be held in Honolulu over the next two weeks to celebrate Women's History Month.
On Monday, there will be a celebration of life to honor two women whose dedication to women's and civil rights has inspired many in Hawai'i. "Over the Rainbow" will honor the memories of Ah Quon McElrath, a social activist who fought for worker's rights, and Donnis Thompson, a trailblazer in women's athletics and education.
The event will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach Park.
On March 16, a play in honor of Queen Lili'uokalani will be performed at 6 p.m. at the McCoy Pavilion Auditorium.
The events are sponsored by the Honolulu Committee on the Status of Women, the Hawai'i State Commission on the Status of Women, and the Hawai'i Friends of Civil Rights. For reservations, call 586-5758.
