Hawaii's Ho, Bartels surf to semifinals in Australia

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i surfers Coco Ho and Melanie Bartels advanced to the semifinals of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast women's contest yesterday.

The second and third rounds, and the quarterfinals were run yesterday in 2- to 3-foot waves at Duranbah Beach, Australia.

Ho, who is from Sunset Beach, upset No. 2-ranked Silvana Lima in the third round. Ho is a world tour rookie, so this is her first contest as a member of the tour.

"We can both get good scores, so it was just up to who got the better rides," said Ho, 17. "Towards the end of the heat, it went a bit quiet, so I was lucky I got some early scores."

Bartels, who is from Wai'anae, upset No. 3 Sofia Mulanovich in the quarterfinals.

Bartels and Ho will surf against each other in one semifinal. World champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia will take on Paige Hareb of New Zealand in the other semifinal.
