March events to honor women's trail blazers

Advertiser Staff

Two events will be held in Honolulu over the next two weeks to celebrate Women's History Month.

On Monday, there will be a celebration of life to honor two women whose dedication to women's and civil rights has inspired many in Hawai'i. "Over the Rainbow" will honor Ah Quon McElrath, a social activist who fought for worker's rights, and Donnis Thompson, a trailblazer in women's athletics and education.

The event will be held from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach Park.

On March 16, a play in honor of Queen Lili'uokalani will be performed at 6 p.m. at the McCoy Pavilion Auditorium. The play was first performed at a celebration of Lili'uokalani's birthday in 2001.

The events are sponsored by the Honolulu Committee on the Status of Women, the Hawai'i State Commission on the Status of Women, and the Hawai'i Friends of Civil Rights. Both events are free and open to the public.

For reservations, call 586-5758.
