Determined not to let recent history repeat itself, 'Iolani corrected its first-half, free-throw shooting woes and pulled away for a 60-50 victory over stubborn Lahainaluna last night in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division I Boys Basketball Championships.

A crowd of about 700 at Radford's James Alegre Gym watched the Raiders improve to 11-2 in the regular and postseason and advance to today's 5 p.m. quarterfinal game against No. 3 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Waiakea (11-2) at Radford.

On the same court two years ago, 'Iolani saw its record streak of five straight state titles officially come to an end when it missed 23 of 39 free-throw attempts in a stunning quarterfinal loss to Kamehameha-Hawai'i.

Last night, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up Raiders made just 6 of 14 free throws in the first half and clung to a 27-21 lead after two periods.

"I thought about what happened two years ago, when we were 16-of-39, because it was in this same gym," 'Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "We just had to settle down and make shots."

The Raiders found their mark in the second half, sinking 15 of 19 attempts from the line, including 11-of-13 in the fourth quarter.

'Iolani took its first lead at 7-4 on Reid Saito's 3-pointer with 5:12 remaining in the first period and never relinquished it, but the missed free throws and several turnovers in transition helped the Maui Interscholastic League runner-up Lunas (8-7) stay close.

"We didn't know what to expect," said Raiders senior forward Pablo Warner, who finished with 11 points, five rebounds and six steals. "We just knew they would be competitive, because this is the state tournament. (In the second half) we just wanted to bring more positive energy and have fun, because in the first half there were a lot of negatives."

'Iolani opened the second half with an 11-2 run to stretch the lead to 38-23 after Brandon Ball made a technical free throw with 4:10 left.

But Lahainaluna hung tough and closed to 55-45 after T.J. Rickard's layup with 1:29 remaining in the game.

The Raiders then made 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

"That's a championship team, a championship program," Lunas coach Eric Balinbin said of the Raiders.

Kainoa Chu led 'Iolani with a game-high 17 points, including 11 of 12 free throws in the second half.

Reimers Pinho led Lahainaluna with 16 points, Rickard added 13 points and Samuel Kiek had 10 points and seven rebounds.

PUNAHOU 51, CAMPBELL 32

Taylor Crabb scored a game-high 12 points, including 7 of 8 free throws in the second half, to help the Buffanblu pull away from the Sabers in the final two periods at Radford.

Defending state champion Punahou improved to 10-6 and will play No. 2 seed and O'ahu Interscholastic Association champ Kahuku (17-1) in tonight's 7 o'clock quarterfinal at Radford.

The Buffanblu led from start to finish last night, but Campbell (12-5) closed to 26-23 on Zachery Manuel's layup with 4:51 remaining in the third period.

Punahou, the ILH's third-place team, then finished the quarter with a 9-4 run to lead 35-27 entering the fourth and made 12 of 16 free throws in the final period to seal the victory.

The Sabers, who finished fourth in the OIA, were limited to 11 points in the second half — and just five in the fourth quarter.

"A lot of our turnovers were unforced errors, but (the Buffanblu) also did a lot to put pressure on us in the backcourt," Campbell coach Zaricke Jackson said. "They were physical, and we couldn't finish shots even when we were open."

With starting forward Kai Gaddis out with a dislocated elbow, Punahou got a big boost from senior guard Shane Yoshiyama, who was making just his fourth start of the season.

Yoshiyama scored eight points in the first half, with the baskets coming after the Sabers made mini-runs to close the gap.

"(Gaddis) is a tough loss, he does so much for us," Yoshiyama said. "I just stuck to my role and tried to orchestrate the offense. All I saw was them playing a zone, so I tried to penetrate and if someone came up to defend then I would dish off. But no one stayed on me, so I took the shot."

Buffanblu coach Dan Hale said Yoshiyama has been a valuable contributor all season.

"He's been our glue, and he usually does it on defense but tonight he gave us some offense when we couldn't get it going from others," Hale said. "Shane is the ultimate role player, the ultimate team player. Campbell is a very good team and we needed something like that. He stepped up. That's what you need in a state tournament."

Reserve post Manti Te'o also made huge contributions, scoring all seven of his points in the first half and finishing with five steals and three rebounds.

"He was all over the floor tonight," Hale said of Te'o. "We needed that, we needed everything we can get."

Manuel led the Sabers with nine points, Christian Storment added eight points and seven rebounds and Patrick Ward contributed seven points and nine rebounds.
