Bricks being sold to help restore Pioneer smokestack
The Lahaina Restoration Foundation has launched a "Buy a Brick" campaign to raise money for restoration of the Pioneer Mill smokestack.
The 200-foot chimney is all that remains of Pioneer Mill Co., which was founded in 1860 and closed in 1999. The foundation plans to restore the top of the Lahaina landmark, which was removed several years ago for safety reasons. The estimated cost of the project is $300,000.
Bricks purchased by the public will be used to create a circular walkway around the base of the smokestack. Bricks are being sold in various sizes for a donation of $100 to $750, and can be engraved with the donor's name, a company logo or other message. The first 100 people to order a brick will receive a free replica brick as a keepsake.
Proceeds from the sale of the bricks will help offset restoration costs of the smokestack, installation of interpretive plaques and landscaping.
Donations are tax-deductible. To buy a brick, contact the Lahaina Restoration Foundation office at 661-3262.
