Hawai'i third baseman Vinnie Catricala said yesterday that he has agreed to terms on a signing bonus with the Seattle Mariners.

Catricala, who completed his junior season of eligibility, was drafted in the 10th round by the Mariners.

"Feels great," Catricala said. "It's a relief. With all the things leading up to this, I'm ready to go and play."

He will report to the Mariners' rookie club in Pulaski (Va.) of the Appalachian League Sunday. The season begins Tuesday.

Catricala declined to disclose his signing bonus. He said he will sign today.

Catricala's departure leaves the Rainbows with a vacancy at third base. He is coming off his best season as a Rainbow, batting .349 with 13 doubles, 13 home runs and 44 RBI. His 13 homers rank fourth on UH's all-time single season leaders list. His 20 career homers ties him for third with Markus Owens.

Still undecided is UH left-handed pitcher Sam Spangler, a 20th-round pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Rainbows already lost recruit Kirk Wetmore, a left-handed pitcher out of Mount Hood JC in Oregon. He signed after the Cleveland Indians picked him in the 11th round.

Deadline for collegiate players with eligibility left and recent high school graduates to sign is Aug. 17.
