Former two-time All-State Player of the Year Shawna Kuehu from Punahou has signed a scholarship agreement to play for the University of Hawai'i women's basketball team.
The signing of Kuehu, who led Punahou to state titles in 2005, 2006 and 2008 but did not play collegiately last season, was announced this morning by new UH coach Dana Takahara-Dias.
"I am pleased to have Shawna join the Rainbow Wahine basketball 'ohana," said Takahara-Dias, who was hired May 28.
Kuehu was one of the most highly recruited basketball players following her senior season in 2008.
"It feels good to sign with UH," Kuehu said. "I'm excited to get back on the court. I'm also happy to be Coach Dana's first recruit."
"It was great coaching her with Team Aloha and to add a player like Shawna, shows our commitment to recruit locally," Takahara-Dias said.
In the state championship game her sophomore season, Kuehu scored a record 37 points. Her senior year, she scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the state title victory.
Kuehu's twin sister, Shaena-Lyn, plays for Idaho and was named to the Western Athletic Conference's All-Freshman team.
