BYUH's Li gains tennis honor

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Elwen Li has been named Pacific West Conference Player of the Year for tennis, and teammate Yuan Jia was named conference Freshman of the Year.

BYU-Hawai'i's Jenny Chin and Wen-Lin Wang also made the PacWest first team in singles; as did Hawai'i Pacific's Nina Mihova and Zora Vlckova.

BYU-Hawai'i's Li and Jia, and Chin and Wang, and HPU's Ingrid Cseh and Vickova were named first-team All-Pac West in doubles.

BYUH's Dave Porter was Coach of the Year.

PEREZ, MAEKAWA WIN QUALIFIERS

Ryan Perez and Sean Maekawa qualified yesterday for the USGA Amateur Public Links by winning sectionals on separate islands.

Perez shot a 1-over 141 to win the O'ahu section qualifier by four strokes.

Maekawa claimed the Big Island section qualifier by two strokes with a 141. It's the fifth consecutive year Maekawa will be making the trip.

The USGA Amateur Public Links will be July 13 to 18 in Norman, Okla.
