MLB: Laser lights flashing from stands force halt to Phils-Cards game

PHILADELPHIA — Kyle Lohse struggled, Jason Motte imploded and not even Julio Lugo’s base-hit jubilee was enough to keep pace with Philadelphia’s brawny offense.
But after a 14-6 drubbing by the Phillies on Saturday, the Cardinals were most concerned about a handful of at-bats they described as “disrespectful” and even “dangerous.”
During the seventh and eighth innings at Citizens Bank Park, at least five Cardinals had a laser pointer flashed at them from the stands during their at-bats. Albert Pujols and Lugo had a green laser shined in their eyes. Pujols’ at-bat in the seventh inning was stopped as stadium officials combed the area where they believed the laser originated.
“It’s not just unsportsmanlike, it’s dangerous,” Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. Asked about the Cardinals’ formal reaction, La Russa said, “I’m not sure about a protest. It’s not the simplest solution. You worry more about bad precedent. ... Both sides’ fans doing it. Eye for eye. Tooth for tooth.”
