Swimming: Olympic champ Ilchenko withdraws during 10K

ROME — Olympic champion Larisa Ilchenko withdrew midway through the women’s 10-kilometer open water race at the world championships Wednesday due to an apparent injury.
The Russian cited a problem with her left leg after winning the silver medal in Tuesday’s 5K race.
Ilchenko was brought ashore in a jet ski shortly after the 1-hour mark of a race that usually lasts about two hours. Upon reaching the beach, the limping swimmer was accompanied by medical officials.
