Softball: Ex-Rainbow Smethurst helps pitch Australia into World Cup final

Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY — Chelsea Forkin had a bases-loaded triple in a five-run first inning as Australia jumped on Italy (0-5) early, and former University of Hawai‘i pitcher Justine Smethurst pitched a one-hitter in an 8-0 victory over Italy at the World Cup of Softball.

Australia (3-2) will meet the United States in the championship game tomorrow night.
Brenda De Blaes added a two-run double in the fourth inning to put the Aussies in position for the mercy rule win.

Sara Avanzi had a one-out single in the fifth to break up a no-hit bid by Smethurst (2-0). Smethurst struck out 11 and walked one in the game called after 4 1/2 innings because of the tournament's 8-run mercy rule.
