University of Hawai'i senior Emma Friesen finished sixth in the one-meter springboard at the 25th Summer World University Games Saturday in Belgrade, Serbia. Friesen won the 2008 NCAA championship.

Friesen tallied 251.10 points in the eight-woman final. The 20-year-old had placed fifth in the preliminary round with 256.30 points and was second in her semifinal — fourth overall — with 259.70 points.

In the decisive round, Friesen was hurt by a miss on her second of five dives, a front two and a half pike that earned only 46.80 points.

"I've had problems with that dive before. It's either very good or it ends up pretty bad like today," Friesen said on Canada's World University Web site. "I'm disappointed. I didn't come here to finish top eight."

Rainbow Wahine water polo players Serena Bredin, Saara Majuri and Monika Eggens are also representing UH and Canada at the games. Bredin and Majuri will be juniors next season and Eggens a sophomore.

Eggens had a game-high three goals in Canada's 9-3 opening victory over Serbia, while Bredin started in goal and recorded 10 saves.

"There's always room for improvement, but it was a good start for us and hopefully we'll get better every day," Eggens said. "Training with Hungary was really good and prepared us well for these Games, and I think it will continue to help us throughout the tournament."

Russia beat Canada, 13-7, Sunday. Majuri had two goals and Eggens one, while Bredin had 12 saves.

3-TIME CHAMPS BACK FOR NIGHT DOUBLES

Minh Le and Wei-Yu Su will be going for the first four-peat in the 39-year history of Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles when the tournament opens July 26.

Le and Su have beaten former Hawai'i Pacific All-Americans Jan Tribler and Mika Maata in the past three championship matches. Tribler and Maata are also back.

'Aiea's Dennis Lajola, who plays No. 1 for the University of Hawai'i, is teaming with pro Ikaika Jobe, a Punahou graduate.

There will also be a "senior" team, with KRC General Manager Bruce Nagel and Oahu Club Director of Tennis Henry Somerville.

Jobe won Night Doubles in 2004 with Bradley Lum-Tucker. Somerville is also a former champion, winning in 1986, '89, '90 and '92 with twin brother Jim.

The late Peter Isaak and Kendall Char hold the record with five Night Doubles titles, but never won more than three in a row.

The championship match will be Aug. 8. Matches are at 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. each night. There is no admission charge. Food and beverages are available for purchase.
