Obama sends video backing Chicago 2016 Olympic bid

LONDON — President Barack Obama has renewed his support for Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Summer Games in a video message to African Olympic officials.

Obama says the Olympics offer America the chance to “reach out and renew our bonds of friendship around the world, to welcome the world to our shores with open arms.”
The president offered his government’s commitment to help Chicago host a “great and historic games” and strengthen the Olympic movement worldwide.
The video was shown Tuesday during a presentation by Chicago bid leaders at a meeting of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa in Abuja, Nigeria.
Bid leaders from Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo were also making presentations.
The IOC will select the host city on Oct. 2.
