Kauai surfer ties for fifth
Advertiser Staff
Dustin Barca of Kaua'i tied for fifth place in the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro men's surfing contest yesterday.
Barca advanced to the quarterfinals, then was eliminated by world No. 1-ranked Joel Parkinson of Australia.
Kekoa Bacalso of Mililani was eliminated in the fourth round, also by Parkinson.
Florida's Kelly Slater won the contest for his first victory of 2009.
Slater defeated Brazil's Adriano de Souza in the one-on-one final, 17.94-14.67.
Slater made a last-minute decision to enter the Brazil contest, and then had to endure delayed flights and missing baggage. He surfed on a borrowed board in his first-round heat because his boards were delayed.
Slater, who won his record ninth world championship in 2009, entered the contest ranked No. 25 in 2009. He is now No. 9.
The contest was the fourth of 10 stops on the 2009 ASP World Tour.
