After 13 seasons guiding Roosevelt High School's football program and nearly 30 years total in coaching, Les Parrilla stepped down last week.

Parrilla, 47, told the returning Rough Riders on Friday that he would not be coming back next season. Parrilla told The Advertiser last night he wants to spend more time with his four children, ages 8 through 18.

"I talked with my wife, and we decided I gotta spend more time with our own kids so that they have opportunities, too," Parrilla said.

Among active Hawai'i football head coaches, only Lahainaluna's Bobby Watson (20 seasons), 'Iolani's Wendell Look (18) and 'Aiea's Wendell Say (17) had been leading their school's program longer than Parrilla. Prior to taking the helm at Roosevelt in 1996, Parrilla had been an assistant for the Rough Riders and also at 'Aiea and Kalani, his alma mater.

Parrilla also helped run a summer combine earlier this decade where players could be measured in the 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, etc. to provide data for college recruiters, a program he hopes to resume.

ILH GIRLS SOCCER TITLE MAY BE DECIDED TODAY

Kamehameha can win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls soccer championship today with a victory over Mid-Pacific in the regular-season finale.

Kickoff is set for 4:15 p.m. at Kamehameha.

Punahou (9-0-3) actually is in first place with 30 championship points, but the Buffanblu finished their regular season on Saturday. Kamehameha (9-0-2, 29 points) can gain three points by beating MPI (3-7-1) today or one point with a tie.

If Punahou and Kamehameha end up tied with 30 points, they will meet in a winner-take-all playoff on Wednesday.

Both teams already have secured the ILH's two Division I state tournament berths.

LEILEHUA'S JENKINS WINS GATORADE AWARD AGAIN

Leilehua senior Bryce Jenkins has been named Gatorade Hawai'i Boys Cross County Runner of the Year for the second straight season.

Jenkins won his third consecutive individual state championship in October with a 3-mile time of 17 minutes, 13 seconds, leading the Mules to their second straight team title.

Jenkins also has maintained a "B" average, is an active member of his church and has volunteered in programs for literacy-outreach and the homeless.
