Here is the statement issued this morning by Gov. Linda Lingle on the inauguration of President Barack Obama:

One of the strengths of our nation is the peaceful transition of leadership, symbolizing the continuity of American democracy, as well as the enduring hope for a stronger future.

Today's swearing-in of our nation's 44th president is a historic occasion in which all Americans can take great pride. For the people of Hawai'i, this presidential inauguration holds special significance because of the local roots of President Barack Obama.

As President Obama and Vice President Biden begin their first day in office, I am confident that the fundamental principals that bind us as citizens of our nation will also bring us together in overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities in the years ahead.

In Hawai'i, as in Washington, D.C., our focus is on developing practical and innovative solutions that will secure a brighter and more secure economic future for all the people of our state and nation.

I look forward to working with the new Obama administration, together with Hawai'i's congressional delegation, on measures that reflect our shared commitment to revitalize our economy and create jobs, while investing in comprehensive initiatives to modernize public infrastructure, enhance energy security and expand information technology broadband.

Through the collective resolve of our people, the strength of our diversity, and the democratic principals that have guided our state since 1959 and our nation for the past 233 years, I am optimistic about what we can and must do to reinvigorate our economy, fortify our competitiveness in the global marketplace and improve the quality of life for all our citizens.
