An unknown Good Samaritan helped six teenage hikers from South America get to safety after the group found themselves stranded along the Moleka Trail in Makiki on Saturday night.
The teenagers — three girls and three boys — had cell phones, but the phones were not compatible with local service, said Fire Department spokesman Earle Kealoha.
An unidentified man put the teens in contact with the department around 9 p.m. and served as a go-between for them and a rescue team.
An engine company hiked in to assist the group, which was able to make it off the trail around 11 p.m., with light provided by a helicopter.
The 0.75-mile trail is part of the Honolulu Mauka Trail System.
