More rain may be coming Thursday

 •  Floods caused $50M in damage, state says

Advertiser Staff and News Reports

The weather front that passed through the state Saturday night and yesterday let loose bouts of heavy showers and wind, the National Weather Service said.

Heavy rains and thunderstorms had been predicted for the Islands, possibly causing flooding. But by midday yesterday the sun shone brightly on most of O'ahu.

"We're behind the front now," said Jeff Powell, lead forecaster. "It's all pau."

It was a different story on the Big Island, where the storm downed power lines and dumped heavy rain yesterday. High wind knocked a tree onto utility wires at the historical Moku'aikaua Church in Kailua, Kona. Hawaiian Electric Light Co. was working to restore power to pockets of Captain Cook and Honalo.

Today should see surf of 15 to 20 feet on the North Shore of O'ahu and 10 to 15 feet along the west shore, Powell said. East-facing shores should see waves of 2 to 3 feet. South-facing shores should see waves of 3 feet or less.

A new front may bring more rain to the Islands Thursday night through Saturday, the weather service said.
