ISLAND SCOOPS
Jump start the new year
There's more to New Year's than fireworks and champagne.
At the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i tomorrow, there will be taiko drummers, mochi pounding, bon dancing and appearances by the Kikaida brothers.
And no, it's not a belated celebration, but a jump start on the Year of the Ox, which begins Jan. 26.
Last year, the New Year's 'Ohana Festival drew more than 13,000 people, who participated in activities both at the center and Mo'ili'ili Field.
The event kicks off with a Shinto blessing at 10 a.m., followed by arrow shooting and a lion dance by the Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble.
Then, at 10:30 a.m., the entertainment begins.
For Kikaida fans, be near the field stage at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. for 30-minute performances with audience participation and autograph sessions with Ban Daisuke, who starred in "Inazuman" and "Kikaida."
The field stage will also feature mochi pounding demonstrations, Hawaiian and Japanese music and other entertainment, while traditional music, dance and martial arts performances will be held at the center's stage.
Admission is free, but prepare to be tempted by the craft and multicultural food booths sponsored by Japanese prefecture clubs, which will offer regional delicacies to add to some of the localized offerings. Where else will you be able to find both KC Drive Inn Waffle Dogs and andadogs?
The event lasts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 944-1123 or visit www.jcch.com.
