Weather: Heavy rains expected this weekend

An area of high pressure will remain north of the islands, bringing trade winds today, the National Weather Service said.

Winds will weaken and shift to the southeast tonight as a cold front approaches the islands from the northwest, forecasters said.

The front will move through the islands Saturday night and Sunday, bringing isolated thunderstorms and locally heavy rainfall.

There's a closer look at what to expect during the next few days:

Today: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a high near 79. East wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 67. East wind between 8 and 10 mph.

Friday: Widespread haze. Sunny, with a high near 79. South wind between 9 and 11 mph.

Friday Night: Widespread haze. Mostly clear, with a low around 66. East wind between 7 and 9 mph.

Saturday: Widespread haze. Sunny, with a high near 79. South wind between 7 and 11 mph.

Saturday Night: Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. South wind around 9 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
