The Zip Mobile has finally cleared the morning-commute lane-and-a-half of the H-1 Freeway that had been blocked for much of the day, choking the pau hana commute between Radford Drive and Nimitz Highway.

The Zip Mobile had been blocked by a hole that went all the way through the bridge deck of the freeway and was discovered before 11:30 a.m. today, said Tammy Mori, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation.

With the hole finally patched, the Zip Mobile reconfigured the portion of H-1 Freeway for the west-bound commute at 5:05 p.m. tonight, Mori said.

The hole had blocked the Zip Mobile in its morning commute position, cutting off one-and-a-half out of five westbound lanes.

DOT officials had told commuters to expect the freeway to re-open at 5:30 p.m.

"Expect some major congestion," Mori said. "Consider leaving town a little bit earlier."

The section of H-1 has had erosion problems before, Mori said, and the hole found today appears to be weather-related.

There were no reports of damaged vehicles, Mori said.

Triton Marine, a private contractor, has been hired to repair the damage and is using fast-curing concrete, Mori said.
