Since dog parks are fairly new, most people aren't quite sure what is correct dog park etiquette. Thanks to reader Susie who suggested this topic be shared among all of us dog lovers.

Here are some tips to know before you go to the dog park:

1. Make sure your dog is fully vaccinated.

2. If your dog is unwell, do not bring it to the park. Parasites (worms, fleas) and other communicable diseases (kennel cough, etc.) can infect other dogs.

3. Your dog should be well-adjusted and sociable. If your dog has aggression or fear issues, he will not enjoy himself or play well.

4. Dogs should not be allowed to jump on or "mark" (urinate on) people. If he is harassing another dog or person, please get your dog under control immediately.

5. Do not bring any type of treats (dog or human) to the park. It may cause fights among even the most sociable dogs.

6. If your dog has a lot of energy, consider parking several blocks away. The long walk to the park may help burn off some of that energy before you get there.

7. Consider leaving the park if your dog is making others (humans and dogs) uncomfortable.

8. Do not punish someone else's dog for bad behavior.

9. Pick up after your dog in the park and outside too. Do not leave it for someone to step on.

On our previous trip to the dog park several Sundays ago at the Hawaii Kai Dog Park, I'm embarrassed to say that I wasn't paying attention to what my own dog was doing. Daily Dish blogger Catherine Toth told me that my friend, Harris, picked up after Zoe. Shame on me for being so inattentive!
