Films about Latin music, culture screening at UH

Music & Culture of the Latin World, a film series, begins Sunday at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Spalding Auditorium.

The films screen Sundays at 5 p.m. through May 10.

Admission is $5 general, $3 UH faculty and students. 223-0130.

The lineup:

  • "Tango Bar"

    Directed by Marcos Zurinaga; Argentina, 1989, 90 minutes

    Raul Julia stars as a political exile who reunites with his old partner Ricardo at Ricardo's bar. Isla Tango dancers, directed by George Garcia, will perform after the screening.

  • "Between 2 Worlds"

    Directed by Jose Jaramillo; U.S./ Mexico, 2008, 118 minutes

    A look at the Mayan calendar, and how it could foster an enlightened state for humankind.

  • "Roots of Rhythm"

    Produced by PBS; U.S/Caribbean, 180 minutes

    Harry Belafonte narrates a film on the history of Latin music, from West Africa, to Spain, Cuba and America.

  • "Tapas"

    Directed by José Corbacho and Juan Cruz; Spain, 2005, 93 minutes

    Three loosely interwoven stories are set in a Barcelona tapas bar.

  • "Mysteries of Peru"

    Produced by BBC; Great Britain/ Peru, 1985, 110 minutes

    Two programs focus on the figures in the Peruvian desert at Nazca; and what might have caused the decline of a pre-Incan civilization.

  • "El Amor Brujo"

    Directed by Carlos Saura; Spain, 1986, 105 minutes

    The final film in Saura's dance trilogy (following "Blood Wedding" and "Carmen") is set in a gypsy shantytown.

  • "Sergei Eisenstein: Mexican Fantasy"

    Directed by Sergei Eisenstein/Oleg Kovalov; Mexico/Russia 1930/1998, 93 minutes

    Biographer Oleg Kovalov's interpretation of film pioneer Sergei Eisenstein's unfinished "Que Viva Mexico."
