UH water polo team fourth at UC Irvine

Ann Belden, Tanya Gandy and Katie Rulon each scored three goals as No. 4 UCLA beat No. 3 Hawai'i, 12-7, yesterday in the third-place water polo match of the UC Irvine Invitational at Irvine, Calif.
Brittany Fullen made 10 saves for the Bruins, who led 4-0 after one period.
Kelly Mason, Monika Eggens and Ryan Hanson-Swaner each had two goals for the Rainbow Wahine (8-6).
Earlier in the day, Melissa Seidemann scored four goals as No. 2 Stanford beat UH, 11-10, in the semifinals.
Lisa van Raalte scored three goals for the 'Bows.
Stanford beat Southern California, 12-11, in sudden-death overtime to win the title.
GOLF
MASON, CALIP PREVAIL
Professional Nick Mason made eight birdies en route to a final-round 7-under-par 64 yesterday to successfully defend his title at the 12th annual Hilo Invitational Pro-Am and Golf Tournament.
Mason, a former Hawai'i-Hilo standout, finished with a two-round total of 9-under 133 to beat first-round leader Jarett Hamamoto (70) by four strokes. Kevin Shimomura finished third with 69—138.
Mason offset a bogey on the 10th hole when he three-putted with birdies at Nos. 1, 3, 6, 8, 9, 12, 14 and 16.
"Yesterday, I had a lot of left-to-right putts. I couldn't make any of them," said Mason, who became the first three-time winner of the tournament. "Today, I tried to give myself better putts by hitting it to correct side of the hole."
Kamehameha-Hawai'i junior Nainoa Calip beat Kellen-Floyd Asao with a 15-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the amateur division.
Calip (71) and Asao (68) finished 36 holes at 3-under 139. UHH golfer Zadi Ari placed third with 69—140.
BASEBALL
HPU SWEEPS SERIES
Danny Cox pitched six shutout innings with seven strikeouts and Aaron Asher had three hits, including a two-run homer, as Hawai'i Pacific completed a four-game sweep of Academy of Art with an 8-3 victory yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.
Jonah Hobson had two hits and three RBIs for the Sea Warriors (8-0). Darnell Quinny batted 3 for 5 for the Urban Knights (0-6).
SOFTBALL
BYUH TAKES TWO
Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept Chaminade, 2-0 and 9-3, Saturday night in a non-conference doubleheader at Central O'ahu Regional Park.
Katresha Veazie pitched a six-hitter in the 11-inning opener, striking out three and walking none, and also hit a sacrifice fly to score the game's first run in the top of the 11th. Kahea Alohikea-Betham added a solo homer for BYUH (4-8).
Chelsi Walls also went the distance for Chaminade (0-8), allowing eight hits while striking out two and walking one.
In the nightcap, Lauren Felding and Ivy Sessions each had three hits and two RBIs to lead BYUH.
The game was called by the umpires with one out and the bases loaded for Chaminade in the bottom of the seventh when the lights, which are on an automatic timer, began going out and it became unsafe to play.
WEIGHTLIFTING
YAMAUCHI SETS MARK
Kyle Yamauchi, competing in the 136-pound weight class, set a state record in the clean and jerk with a 299-pound lift in the O'ahu Open Weightlifting Championships Saturday at the Ward Warehouse.
