HILO, Hawai'i — An O'ahu firm wants to build a new resort complex in Ka'u.
'Aiea-based Nani Kahuku Aina LLC wants to build an airstrip and an undetermined number of hotels, homes, golf courses and condominiums on its southern Big Island property.
The 16,500-acre parcel sits between the ocean and the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates and Hawaiian Rancho Estates subdivisions.
Project manager Katherine Peroff says her company has held small talk-story sessions with Ka'u residents and plans to hold larger community meetings in the future.
She says the company wants to make sure whatever is built meets with the community approval.
Previous landowners attempted to build a resort in the area in the 1980s, but the project failed amid community opposition.
