New family hike in Waimea Valley
A new trail has opened at Waimea Valley on O'ahu's North Shore and a guided family hike is being offered to explore it.
Waimea Valley conservation land specialist Laurent Pool will lead the excursion Feb. 28 on the new Ala Ki Trail from the Waihi waterfall at the back of the lower valley up to Kalahee Ridge and the North Valley. Terrain is described as moderately steep, passing through mixed forest and enjoying views of Waimea Bay and surrounding ridges and valleys. The hike is about 2 miles round trip and is open to those 7 years old and older (minors must be accompanied by an adult.)

Required are close-toed, noon-slip hiking shoes and recommended are snacks, insect repellent, sunscreen and water.
The hike with Laurent costs $5 in addition to Valley admission ($10 adults, $5 children and seniors; $6 kamaaina and military adults, $3 kamaaina and military children and seniors with ID).
