QB Club to honor Murakami, Eldredges

Les Murakami and the Eldredge coaching 'ohana will be recognized tonight as Legends in Hawai'i Sports at the 62nd annual Banquet of Champions, organized by the Honolulu Quarterback Club.
The banquet starts at 6 at the New Empress Restaurant in the Chinese Cultural Plaza.
Murakami coached the University of Hawai'i baseball team for more than three decades, amassing 1,067 wins to become one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history. He led UH to the College World Series final in 1980.
The Eldredge family includes three generations of coaches, from David "Pop" Eldredge II, who coached baseball, football and basketball for more than five decades, to his sons Dave and Pal, and his grandsons, "Boy" and Duane, all of whom have made an impact on sports in Hawai'i.
Also being recognized will be outstanding male and female prep, adult and senior athletes, the male and female Athletes of the Year, Coach of the Year, and special recognition of outstanding contributors to sports in the Islands.
In addition, the club will honor long-time Punahou athletic director Ralph Martinson with the Paul Durham Award for athletic directors. Track and field official Gordon Scruton will receive the Earl Galdeira officials' award, and Honolulu Advertiser reporter Ann Miller will receive the Les Keiter award for sports journalism.
A tribute also is planned for national championship teams, including the Waipi'o Little League world champions and the UH cheerleaders.
Tickets ($45) to the banquet may be purchased at the door.

UH SNAPS SKID
Courtney Baughman pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts as Hawai'i beat Saint Louis, 8-3, last night in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic at Henderson, Nev.
Tanisha Milca had three hits, and Clare Warwick and Amanda Tauali'i each had two hits and three RBIs for UH (2-7), which snapped a seven-game losing streak.
Earlier, Oregon scored two runs in the top of the sixth to edge UH, 3-2. UH freshman Stephanie Ricketts, who spaced six hits and struck out six, took the loss in her debut.
HPU SWEEPS BYUH
Courtney Kessell pitched a three-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks as Hawai'i Pacific beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 2-0, yesterday at Sea Warrior Field.
In the second game, Sherise Musquiz pitched a two-hitter, and Maile Kim and Laine Shikuma each had three hits and two RBIs to lead HPU (7-1) to a 9-1 victory over BYUH (2-6) in a game shortened to five innings.

KAUFMAN SETS MARK
Hawai'i's Amber Kaufman set an NCAA provisional mark and school indoor record by winning the high jump with 5 feet, 11 1/2 inches yesterday at the Northern Arizona Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Sarah Saddleton placed second (5-9 3/4) and UH teammate Emily Sheppard third (5-7 3/4). UH's Annett Wichmann won the shot put with 45-11 1/4.
