In a game-changing moment that had a direct effect on both teams, the Kealakehe goalkeeper was given a red card that had a temporary and permanent impact on the game.

Punahou defeated Kealakehe, 2-1, in a quarterfinal game of the JN Automotive Group/HHSAA Boys Division I Soccer State Championships yesterday at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Punahou (9-2-3) plays No. 2 seed Mililani (13-1-2) in one of tonight's semifinals at 7. Kapolei (12-5-1) and top-seeded 'Iolani (12-0-1) play in the other semifinal at 5.

"It's not that we lose our starting goalkeeper, but it's how we lose him," Kealakehe acting head coach Thor Stensby said. "There's a cross coming in and the goalkeeper goes for the ball and he crashes into the player inside his box and the referee gives him a red card and PK and that changes the whole game for us.

"In the beginning it gives the players a burst in the sense that they tied it up, 1-1, but in the long run it's hard to keep that up."

After a scoreless first half, all three goals were scored in the first 15 minutes after intermission.

The scoring started after Kealakehe goalkeeper Oscar Delgado was red-carded and ejected after coming out to challenge for the ball with Punahou senior forward Alessi Sia. Punahou was awarded a penalty kick and Lucas Lam put it away in the 47th minute.

"Me and Anthony Mau, between the two of us we were trying to decide who should take it," Lam said. "We wanted to go with who had more confidence and I just stepped up and took it."

Punahou captain Kevin Johns said along with playing 11-on-10 against Kealakehe, the incident helped the Buffanblu emotionally.

"When ever there's a red card, the momentum shifts both ways," Johns said. "Our teammate is down and it fires us up because we had an injured player out so we really stepped up as a team."

The Waveriders tied it on a goal by senior forward Jacob Kimi after a long, driven free kick by junior Raydan Bala. The ball bounced around the 6-yard box before Kimi scored on a low shot into the left corner in the 50th minute.

"That's natural ... any time you go up you get a sense of confidence," Punahou coach David Trifonovitch said. "You tend to settle in a little bit and you get complacent. They came right at us. So we had to try and pick it up again. We're lucky we got the second goal because that one was hard to get."

Punahou regained the lead when Johns headed in a free kick by junior defender Jonathon Cloutier in the 54th minute.

"I play club with him so I'm able to read his free kicks really well," Johns said. "I knew as soon as the ball was in the air. And I was in the right spot to put it in."
