Inouye says Hawaii could reap $678 million from stimulus package

U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye's office today said Hawaii stands to receive $678 million from the $787 billion economic stimulus package about to be passed by Congress.
Inouye's office said the money will be used for highway and transit projects, education and social services, and housing and environment.
Among these are $125.7 million for highway funding, but which could also be used for rail and port infrastructure, and $158.2 million to prevent cutbacks and layoffs in education and for school modernization.
It also includes tax benefits and credits of $400 per individual and $800 for married couples; $40 million per quarter for 27 months for additional Medicaid reimbursements to help the state bear some of its healthcare costs; and about $30 million for extended unemployment benefits.
