Punahou graduate Michelle Wie, home to celebrate her debut as an LPGA member, bolted into second place after firing a 6-under-par 66 in this afternoon's wet and windy opening round of the SBS Open at Turtle Bay. Wie, a 19-year-old Stanford sophomore, is a shot behind leader Angela Stanford going into tomorrow's second round at Turtle Bay's Palmer Course.

This is Wie's 48th LPGA start, but her first since earning membership at December's qualifying school. At 12, she became the youngest to qualify for an LPGA tournament. She has 13 Top-10 finishes, including a second here in 2005. Wie has won more than $800,000 in the three years she has been a pro.

Wie started with birdie on the first hole. She bogeyed the next, but added three more birdies on the front nine to make the turn in 3-under, and among the top five on the leaderboard at that point. She had a bogey and four birdies — including the final three holes — on the back to shoot the lowest round of the afternoon groups. She is tied with 2008 LPGA Rookie of the Year Yani Tseng in second place.

Tseng beat Wie in the final of the 2004 U.S. Women's Public Links Championship. Wie's last victory came in the 2003 Public Links.

Wie tees off at 7:20 a.m. in tomorrow's second round. The cut comes after 36 holes, with the top 70 and ties playing Saturday's final round. First prize is $180,000.

Pro Angela Park's team won the Pro-Am with a score of 54 Wednesday. Her "amateurs" included 18-year-old pro Tadd Fujikawa and actual amateurs James Park, Yukio Hayashi and Ken Tachibana.
