Injured peregrine falcon on mend in California
A peregrine falcon that was found emaciated and injured at Kahe Point in October was shipped to California yesterday for more recuperation.
Continental Airlines flew the bird to California for free in a special crate.
The bird, named Fawkes after the phoenix in the Harry Potter series, flew out last night for a bird sanctuary in Rosedale, Calif.
Linda Santos, bird curator at the zoo, said the falcon has improved greatly since being found, but still has a lengthy recovery — as long as two years — before it can potentially be released back into the wild. Its injuries included a broken beak.
An artificial beak was fashioned for the bird while its natural beak grows back.
